When you stop recording, the bar for that track will be purple.

When you record with the microphone on your computer, make sure that you’re singing and touch in a clear manner and close to your computer. Try to eliminate the noise out as much as you can.

Look for the loop that you want to use. The “Loop Browser” allows you to filter loops depending on its characteristics, such as scale, instrument, mood, genre, and tone. You can also filter several properties simultaneously; for example, you can search loops that are “Jazz”, “Piano”, and “Grooving”. Once you’ve activated your preferred filters, you’ll see a list of available loops. You can listen to any of the loops you want with only giving double clicks on the name. You will also see information about the tempo, key, and duration of the loops and have the option of adding to your list of favorites.

Basically, regular instruments are manual instruments that means that you have to tap them in order for them to play. For smart instruments, they play automatically.

Step 3

For example, you tapped “Smart Drums”. You will then be lead to another screen where you would find drumkits available and active. On the workspace grid, there are four words that can be read. These are Loud, Complex, Soft, and Simple. These would help you make the sounds and patterns of the instruments that you will choose.

In order to use the workspace shown above, all you need to do is to drag and drop the instruments of your choice. On the left side of the screen shows the current instrument set that you chose. On the right side of the screen are the available instruments under your chosen set. You can have more instruments with your GarageBand download.

After you have set out your pattern, on the upper portion of the screen, you would find the record button. Once you are done recording, just click on the record button again to stop recording.

Step 4

After recording, open “Project Page” from the two icons found on the top left of the screen . This will open another screen where you can edit the sound of the instrument you just recorded. In order to do this, simply double tap on the track that you have recorded. After doing so, you can add another instrtument to your track, just tap the plus (+) sign once again. This time the plus sign is found on the lower left of your screen.

This will help you add another instrument into your track. Suppose you tapped on a stringed instrument.

Step 5

Once you have tapped another instrument, a chord screen would open, just like the one below. On the upper right part of the screen there is a switch that allows you to add either notes or chords. Let us suppose you chose chords. From there, all you need to do is to tap on the chord progression of the song that you plan to do. After that, tap on record to record the chords you chose. This will play along with the drums that you set on earlier. After that, you can add more instruments, doing the same process.

After doing those, you can explore your GarageBand app for more ways of adding effects and editing your song. You can also visit GarageBand online  to get more GarageBand tutorials.

Knowing the answer of these answers is to know the steps to optimize the use of Garageband. Below are some steps to understand better how to use the app.

  • Developing instruments loops by software on real loops

. GarageBand has lots of audio effects that are created via software, if we transform them into a real audio waveform, we will get that these are lighter for the CPU to the time of processing them during the reproduction. To make it just to drag it from the viewer of loops do with button “command” hold, Garageband will transform it into an audio waveform.

  • Blocking the tracks that are definitive

. Any track, while we’re working with Garageband, as a general rule will occupy a space in RAM and will load the CPU working. Once we have clear how will go this track, and do not have intended to modify it, it’s better to block it. We must not forget to make a reproduction once the track is locked, since it is at this time when Garageband pass it to the hard drive, freeing RAM memory.

  • Start from an already created project

. This perhaps may not be producer according to the type of composition that you go to face; the perfect case for this could be the Podcast. Opening a project already created, it is likely that already have everything configured to your liking to start recording. You only need to clean tracks and everything will be ready to start.

  • Save your settings of instruments

. If you are recording real instruments adding effects, do not forget to save these settings (the option appears to have enabled the display of information by pressing the letter “I” that is located in the lower right corner). Keeping it and assigning it a name you can use it in the future, for a different composition and save time looking for the sound you want.

The Other Uses of the GarageBand App aside from Music Recording

What I love about the GarageBand App is that it is versatile – I can use it on my Ipad, my Mac, or when I don’t have both of these gadgets, I can borrow a PC and use it there!

I have been studying college part-time for several years now. The only reason I can’t commit to my studies full time is because I need to fund it myself. I had a regular gig at a bar (which meant I had to work nights!), but there are many impromptu gigs that I would join (which meant I had to be absent from class several times). Two years of this kind of life, and I was seriously considering of just forgetting about college and just focusing on my music career.

But really, much as I love playing in front of an audience, I love playing with kids the most. I love teaching the most. I have decided to go to college because I wanted to be a teacher, and my music career was just a way towards that. But what do I do? I was stuck in a circle – if I quit music and focused on my studies, how to I pay for my needs? If I don’t quit music, then I don’t know what era I would complete my degree.

Then came the garageband app. Far off you say? I assure you, it isn’t.

You see, I have been running my own YouTube channel for years, and I have been getting good views every month. I used to just get gigs out of the channel – clients see how I play, and they get me to perform. But these past year, I have decided to focus on monetizing my channel by putting in content – a guitar tutorial, a cover of a song, and sometimes, even a garageband tutorial! Those tutorials are the most widely watched. Today, I have earned enough from my YouTube channel, that I can afford not to go on gigs.

But the truth is that garageband app is not just content for my channel – it is the power behind my channel. I use it to add music or voice to my video, and the best part is that I can do it even when I am travelling to school (thanks to my trusty iPad). In just a few minutes, for example, while waiting for my order to be served at a restaurant, I can already have a video, complete with a voice over and very soft music! All these with a single gadget!

Of course, the app can be used in many other ways. I know my friends in my former band couldn’t find another guitarist, and so, had to resort to using the garageband app for feeds of my guitar audio tracks. I also used the app one time to edit an interview (clean up voice audio, cut recordings, add soft background music in some parts) I was required to submit for a class. A classmate actually made a short using garageband for all the sound elements of the video!

Its true, Garageband is used mainly by musicians, but the truth is that it can be used many number of ways. It can be used to make class projects more dynamic. In my case, I use it to fund my future.

Finding The Perfect Tempo For Your Recording – Garageband Tutorial

Regardless of whether you begin your GarageBand song on your iOS device or Mac, it’s a smart thought to set the rhythm before setting down tracks. But, new songwriters aren’t sure what beat to use. All they know is that the click-track seems to be too quick or too slow back when they’re attempting to record. No worries. GarageBand offers a simple arrangement to this.

Start by creating a new project for recording your song:

GarageBand for iOS: Tap the Add Song button (+) in the upper-left corner of the My Songs browser. Select an instrument; then tap the Settings button (gear). On the Song Setting screen, select Tempo. (SEE IMAGE BELOW)

garageband tutorial

GarageBand for Mac: In the New Song dialog, select the Songwriter template. The Tempo settings are in with the other song settings in the lower third of the New Project dialog (SEE IMAGE BELOW). Click the disclosure triangle if necessary to show the song settings.

garageband tutorial

Listen to your song in your head, and tap your foot to the tempo in your mind. If necessary, sing, hum or vocalize the music however you like, just to get a sense of the tempo.

Now set the tempo:

GarageBand for iOS: Tap your finger on the Tap to Set Tempo field in time with your song.

GarageBand for Mac: Using your mouse or trackpad, move the cursor over the Tap Tempo button and tap your finger in time with your song—no need to click.

The tempo field updates based on the tempo you tap. Continue tapping until you see an average range for your tempo. Type your average tempo into the Tempo field.

Once you’ve selected a tempo, test it with a click-track:

  • GarageBand for iOS: Tap Done; then tap the Track view button.
  • GarageBand for Mac: Click Create to open the new song.

Play the empty project and hum or sing along to the click-track (or click-track and Drummer in GarageBand for Mac.) If your tempo is good, you’re ready to record. If not, adjust the tempo:

  • GarageBand for iOS: Go back to the Tempo settings and increase or decrease the tempo as needed.
  • GarageBand for Mac: Double-click the Tempo field in the LCD and type a new tempo, or drag the tempo numbers in the Tempo field up or down to raise or lower them.

Now that the tempo is set, you’re ready to record!

In case you’re open to singing and playing guitar or piano/keyboard in the meantime, by all methods record your initial tracks that way. No doubt you’ll rerecord the vocals later; however with this system your guitar or keyboard execution will have the correct feel. That is the reason the principal vocal recording is alluded to as a scratch vocal or tracking vocal.

Musical Typing – GarageBand Tutorial

Delving into the instrument sounds accessible to you is as simple as opening another Software Instrument track and picking a Patch from the Library sheet, however shouldn’t something be said about really playing your picked instrument? In a perfect world you could connect a USB keyboard or controller to your Mac, yet perhaps you’re simply beginning with Garageband and don’t have access to one? Or, on the other hand possibly you’re moving and didn’t have space to pack your keyboard/controller?

Luckily Garageband has an ingenious built in solution – Musical Typing.

It allows you to use the keys on your Mac’s keyboard to play notes, chords and melodies.

Here’s how it works:

To open Musical Typing, first click on “Window” in the toolbar at the top of your screen.

garageband tutorial

Next, click on “Show Musical Typing” (Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut ⌘+K)

garageband tutorial

Done! Now, the Musical Typing window will appear!

garageband tutorial

Here’s a summary of the components:

Pitch Bend: You can use the 1+2 keys to adjust the pitch of whatever note/s you are playing in real time.

Modulation: Keys 3 through 8 will add a set amount of modulation to the note/s played. The effect will differ depending on the instrument you have selected.

Sustain: You can toggle sustain on and off with the Tab key.

Black and White Keys: These are the keys you’ll use to create your melody. Garageband presents them in a way that corresponds to a single octave (C3 to C4 by default) on a Piano keyboard.

Octave: Use the Z and X keys to shift octaves for lower or higher pitched notes.

Velocity: The C and V keys allow you to change to velocity (how hard the note is struck) of your chosen instrument sound.

All that’s left for you to do is hit record and start playing! It can take a bit of getting used to, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

If  you have countless projects in your Garageband project, using a considerable measure of modules or are running an older machine, you may discover the notes you’re recording utilizing Musical Typing don’t generally enlist as they ought to – leaving some notes sounding out of time with the rest of your project.

This issue (known as latency) is created by your Mac attempting to do an excessive number of things without a moment’s delay and while there are steps you can take before recording your execution to limit it, you can likewise have Garageband naturally settle timing issues for you.

It’s called quantization and here’s the means by which it works in Garageband:

  • With the track you’d like to quantize selected, click on the Editor icon in the top right corner of the Garageband window (or use the keyboard short cut E).
  • In the Editor window, click on the ‘Time Quantize’ drop down menu and select the note value you want to use (if you’re not sure which note value to use, try a few different ones out – there will almost certainly be a value that will ‘fit’).

The notes that you’ve recorded will snap into the timing of the note value you chose and fixing any timing or latency errors!

Since you know how to utilize Musical Typing in GarageBand all that is left to do is get stuck in and begin experimenting…
